Bev Blomgren in the trenches!
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Character is what you do when no one is looking.” I think the same is often true with regards to ministry. When it comes to how we use our gifts in serving God’s people, it’s easy to over look the “little things.” Things such as who picks up the phone when it rings in the church office. Who sorts the mail. Who keeps calendars updated so that we don’t end up double (or triple) booking facilities. Who makes sure the copier gets serviced so we can produce our weekly bulletin.
When our beloved administrator, Flora Cruz, left us to take a new job outside the Cluster, it was clear that someone needed to step in and make sure that the myriad administrative tasks of church life didn’t make it more difficult for Helen to take care of her many pastoral duties. The sacred could easily be trumped by the mundane — but the mundane can’t be ignored.
Fortunately for St. Paul’s, we have Bev Blomgren. Bev currently spends a minimum of 15 hours a week in a volunteer capacity to make sure that there is someone in the office to maintain a semblence of administrative order. In addition to simply being available to people who contact St. Paul’s, she has also been organizing files, making sure incoming mail gets to the appropriate recipients, keeping the master calendar current, and coordinating among a lot of busy people who are involved in the daily life of our congregation. She has also been working with Helen on a job description for an eventual replacement for Flora’s position.
Bev’s background in administration and management endow her with the skills required to do what she does — but it’s the heart of a servant that brings her to her own bit of ministry on St. Paul's behalf. What Bev does for our congregation might not be noticeable to those of us who don’t spend time in the church office, but her absence would definitely be felt. So, the next time you see her, please let Bev know how much you appreciate what she’s doing. We’re lucky to have her.
